GLADYS: Middle child, age 8. Feisty, curious, likes to be complimented and approved of.

JEREMIAH: Oldest boy, age 10. Intellectual like his father, but also very willful.

CAPTAIN OF THE SOLDIERS: Arrogant military man. Rules by power and manipulation. A Syrian Greek.

SOLDIERS: Up to five Syrian Greeks. Cocky when in a power position. Meek and intimidated when powerless or overpowered.

MATTATHIAS: Large man, in his 50s. A leader. Powerful. A strong will.

JUDAH: Mattathias’ eldest son. 33. A leader and incredibly clever tactician.

JOHN: Mattathias’ son. 31. A fierce warrior, and fierce defender of the faith.

JONATHAN: Mattathias’ son. 29. An intellectual. Would rather bargain than fight, but willing to put his faith on the line.

SIMEON: Mattathias’ son. 26. Very concerned about how things are going to get done. Has a strong faith, but is not a leader.

ELEAZAR: Mattathias’ youngest son. 23. A bit of a hot-head. Would rather fight than negotiate. Impulsive and strong willed.

ISAAC: Middle-aged Jewish man, whiny, slippery. Clings to those in power. Will do what is best for himself, if not others.

ANTIOCHUS: Cruel and ruthless Emperor of Judea. A Syrian Greek who insists on absolute power and destroys those who stand in his way or disobey him.

GENERALS SERON AND APPOLONIUS: Generals in the Syrian army. Cold-hearted ruthless killers who love power. They follow Antiochus because he is the most powerful man in Judea.

PRIESTS: Two Jewish priests who keep the Temples in Jerusalem in order and lead the Jews in prayer. Responsible for keeping the Eternal light burning.

JEWS: The members of Jewish faith in Judea who fight for their freedom of religion.

1 (chorus)
MESSENGER: Jewish spy who brings word of the enemies’ movements. A nervous, frightened man, who prefers to hide than fight.

Note: The cast size may vary depending on how many soldiers and Jews are cast.

Note: In some parts, gender is interchangeable and will have no affect on the theme of the story, despite the fact that the parts have been written to reflect the original tale’s gender differences.
