THE HERO:

<i>(addresses the audience)</i>It's so easy to forget what

you're after, where you're going and why you want to go. Ten

years we fought in a war, and ten years it took us to get home

again. So many things to make us forget. And so many things

to make us remember.

Like me, Odysseus?

</td>

<i>(As the two confront each other across open space, the players

pantomime the series of events as described: Odysseus and his men

enter the CYCLOPS' cave, steal cheese and wine; CYCLOPS arrives

with his flock of giant sheep, blocks the entrance to the cave

with a huge boulder; he discovers Odysseus and his men, kills

one of them; Odysseus offers the CYCLOPS wine which he drinks

and then falls into a drunken stupor; Odysseus and his men pick

up a stake and blind the CYCLOPS' one eye; the men escape under

the bellies of the sheep, and the CYCLOPS rages to his father,

the god Poseidon. All this happens during the following dialogue.)</i>

Yes, like you, Cyclops, bastard son of Poseidon, one-eyed brat of

You, insult me? Thief! Would-be murderer! You blinded me, robbed

THE HERO:

You foul-smelling monster! Does a host devour his guests and

then pick his teeth with their bones?

He does when they come sneaking in the night to ransack his cave,

But I am a king and I sought your protection. Besides, to break

<td valign="top">

THE TESTER:

<td>

What do I care for your laws or your gods? I am the son of a god!

And Poseidon, my father, will not soon forget the outrage you

brought down upon me.

</td>

<tr>

<td valign="top">

THE HERO:

</td>

What outrage? Was I not to protect myself and my men? You had

killed several already and blocked passage to escape with a rock

too heavy for all of my men to budge.

</td>

<td valign="top">

THE TESTER:

So you, brave hero, got me drunk on Athenian wine. And put out

my one eye with a fire-sharpened stake.

<td valign="top">

THE HERO:

</td>

<td>

Yes, and while you were howling with rage, my men and I clung

to the bellies of your sheep and your rams, so when you moved

the rock from the mouth of the cave, we escaped with your flocks

and were free!

</td>

</tr>

<tr>

<td valign="top">

THE TESTER:

</td>

<td>

Free, yes, of me. But not of my father! Poseidon, god of the sea,

avenges his children... and blind though I am, still my prayers

will be heard... and your way home will bring you even more terrors

than you can imagine... and nightmares will seem like blessings of

comfort!

</td>

<tr>

<td valign="top">

<td>

<i>(THE HERO and THE TESTER each sink to the ground, exhausted

by the intensity of their psychic battle. The rest of the players,

who had exited under the "sheep," re-enter and fall to the ground,

as if exhausted, washed ashore on a beach. All "sleep." Suddenly,

THE DOUBTER wakes, alert, staring off into the distance. As he

starts to call, the others awaken.)</i>
